Assistant Principal's Message

Welcome to Elk Island Public Schools' Continuing Education!

Our mission is to provide quality, affordable and accessible learning opportunities for students of all ages within our region. We believe that opportunities for lifelong learning enhance the personal growth, leisure time and employability of members of our community. To this end, we provide Alberta high school credit courses and general interest courses.

Most Next Step Continuing Education courses are offered at Salisbury Composite High School, but some courses are also offered at Fort Saskatchewan High School. Registrations for courses can be made in person at the Continuing Education office, located in Salisbury Composite High School at 20 Festival Way, Sherwood Park or by phone, fax or mail.

High school credit courses are offered in the evening during the regular school term. During the month of July, summer school provides students with the opportunity to upgrade courses or to complete courses which may be difficult to schedule during the regular school year. If students take summer courses with diploma exams, these examinations are held in August.

With our newly upgraded computer centre and a mobile laptop computer lab, we are able to offer courses on the latest operating systems and software applications used in the workplace. Computer courses are offered in a number of different formats to fit a variety of learning styles and schedules.

We are excited about new course offerings this coming year in the areas of regional cuisine, reflexology and massage, law, business, finance, watercolour and the Italian language. With our videoconferencing suite, equipped with a Polycom Codec unit and Smartboard, we plan to deliver some of our general interest courses to Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont and Vegreville.

Next Step Continuing Education is actively involved with the Community and Adult Learning Council for our region and we work closely with Family and Community Services and the public libraries, as well as other community agencies. We also collaborate with postsecondary institutions such as Norquest College to provide smooth transitions for adult learners.

Next Step Continuing Education is always pursuing new initiatives to enhance our course offerings. If you have a particular area of expertise you would like to share, we invite you to call us at (780) 467-7292.
