Herb Hess

Herb obtained his Red Seal via apprenticeship at Edmonton’s Petroleum Club and the University of Alberta’s Faculty Club before opening the kitchen at Edmonton’s Mirabelle restaurant in 1977. Has also served as Executive Chef of Edmonton’s Royal Glenora Club and Banff Park Lodge before returning to University to obtain a teaching degree. He has taught a Commercial Cooking program at Salisbury Composite High School in Sherwood Park for 27 years. Herb, assisted by his wife Margaret, has taught a great many Continuing Education classes throughout Edmonton, Banff and Sherwood Park and has taught classes for Teacher’s Conventions and Professional Development sessions. During this time, the entire Hess family has taken on many catering functions including the catering at the Devonian Botanic Gardens. Herb served also as Director of Food Services for the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games in Strathcona County. Current plans look towards retirement on an acreage overlooking Pigeon Lake called Longview (It’s a long view to the lake!), growing and cooking with herbs and heirloom vegetables (perhaps teaching the occasional cooking class).


CHEF SERIES: The Chef's Table

Course Length: 9 hours

Location: Salisbury Composite High School

Notes: These are demonstration classes with time to interact with a professional chef and taste the cuisine. Long hair must be tied back and closed-toed shoes must be worn for all classes. We recommend you bring various sized containers based on the type of class you are attending, a bottle of water and an apron.
